DOI Exists, Yet Unavailable on Sci-Hub—Why?

In the realm of scientific research, the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) serves as a unique identifier for research outputs, ensuring accurate citation and traceability of research results. However, some users have encountered a puzzling situation where, even with a DOI, they may not find the corresponding content on Sci-Hub. This raises the question: Why can't Sci-Hub locate content with a DOI?

Firstly, we need to understand how Sci-Hub operates. Sci-Hub acquires and shares paywalled scholarly articles through unauthorized means, often violating copyright laws. The platform disguises itself as legitimate users and uses legitimate means (such as institutional subscriptions) to obtain articles. However, this is not always successful, especially when access to the article is more tightly controlled.

Here are some reasons why an article with a DOI might not be found on Sci-Hub:
1. DOI alone may not be sufficient for access: While the DOI is indeed a unique identifier for an article, it may not always provide direct access. Some articles still require legitimate means (such as subscription or paid downloads) for access, and Sci-Hub cannot bypass these access restrictions.
2. Publisher's security measures: Some publishers implement more robust security measures to prevent unauthorized access by Sci-Hub. This could include more sophisticated authentication mechanisms or blocking Sci-Hub's IP addresses.
3. Periodic updates of articles: Sci-Hub may not update its database promptly, resulting in some newly published or updated articles not being available on Sci-Hub.
4. Changes in DOI: The DOI may change during the lifecycle of an article, especially when the article undergoes revision or updates. If Sci-Hub doesn't update its content corresponding to the DOI, the article may not be found.

In summary, while Sci-Hub provides free access to academic articles for many, due to its illegitimate nature, it cannot guarantee successful access to all articles.
When Sci-Hub fails to retrieve the papers we need, we can compensate for this shortfall by sharing information. In the comments section, everyone can exchange experiences and methods, such as using other legitimate document delivery services, visiting academic libraries, or directly contacting authors. This exchange of information not only helps address individual search issues but also fosters collaboration and mutual assistance within the academic community. Breaking down information barriers and sharing avenues for accessing papers makes it easier for every researcher to obtain the academic resources they need.
